A Good Man is Gone

Several years ago, we had the chance to meet President George H.W. Bush at his summer home in Kennebunkport. He was wheelchair-bound at that point, but always had a smile on his face and joy in his heart. 41, as many called him, had taken to wearing colorful patterned socks during those days and we had brought him some wacky, cactus versions as a gift from the desert, which my daughters presented to him. Turns out, he wore them during a lunch with President Clinton later that summer! It’s been a wonderful memory that my kids have cherished. This man was kind, humble and had the character and heart that I hope our future leaders have. People loved him because he loved people so much.
